Dive Longer, Dive Safer, Dive Smarter
The RAID Nitrox Specialty course is one of the most valuable certifications for recreational divers. Designed to help you extend your bottom time, improve safety, and enhance dive planning, this course teaches you how to use enriched air nitrox—a breathing gas with a higher oxygen content than regular air.
Nitrox reduces nitrogen absorption during dives, allowing for longer and safer underwater adventures. Whether you’re preparing for repetitive dives, multi-day trips, or just looking to maximize your time at depth, the Nitrox Specialty is your next step toward safer, more enjoyable diving.
Why Choose Nitrox Diving?
Nitrox offers several key benefits that enhance your overall diving experience:
- Extended Dive Times: Stay underwater longer by reducing nitrogen absorption, particularly at depths between 18 and 30 meters.
- Reduced Decompression Risk: Lower nitrogen levels decrease the likelihood of decompression sickness, especially on repetitive dives.
- Enhanced Safety: Learn to plan dives effectively and manage oxygen exposure for greater confidence in your diving.
What You Will Learn
This course combines essential theoretical knowledge with practical training to ensure you understand the principles and safe practices of nitrox diving.
Academic Topics
- Understanding Nitrox Mixes
- Learn to use oxygen concentrations between 22% and 40% and understand their benefits and limitations.
- Oxygen Toxicity
- Understand the risks of oxygen toxicity, including its symptoms and how to manage exposure.
- Learn to use a planned PO2 (Partial Pressure of Oxygen) of 1.4 bar and contingency limits of 1.6 bar.
- Dive Planning with Nitrox
- Calculate the Maximum Operating Depth (MOD) based on oxygen content.
- Use dive tables or dive computers to plan safe dives with enriched air.
- Safety Protocols
- Master the steps for analyzing, labeling, and logging nitrox cylinders to ensure safe usage.
- Nitrox Equipment
- Learn about the cleaning, maintenance, and compatibility of your diving gear with enriched air.
Practical Training
- Cylinder Analysis
- Use an oxygen analyzer to confirm the oxygen percentage in your tank and ensure it matches your planned dive profile.
- Dive Planning Tools
- Utilize dive computers and software to create dive plans tailored to your nitrox mix.
- Cylinder Labeling
- Understand the importance of clearly labeling cylinders to prevent mix-ups during dive operations.
- Optional Open Water Dives
- Practice your new skills in real-world conditions with supervised dives, depending on your instructor’s course setup.
Prerequisites
The course is open to divers of all levels, with a few basic requirements:
- Minimum Age: 12 years old.
- Certification:
- RAID Open Water 20 or an equivalent certification from a recognized diving agency.
- Equipment Access:
- Use an oxygen analyzer or the Nitrox Virtual Analyzer app (available through RAID).
Course Standards (ISO-11107:2009)
The RAID Nitrox Diver certification qualifies you to:
- Use nitrox mixes containing 22% to 40% oxygen.
- Plan dives with a Maximum Operating Depth (MOD) based on your gas mix and dive profile.
- Safely dive to a maximum depth of 40 meters (130 feet) within recreational limits, managing oxygen exposure effectively.
Note: This course does not cover decompression diving and is intended for recreational diving limits.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the theory and practical sessions, you’ll receive the RAID Nitrox Specialty Diver certification, which allows you to:
- Dive with enriched air nitrox confidently and safely.
- Plan and execute nitrox dives within recreational diving limits.
- Manage oxygen exposure and use nitrox to extend dive times and reduce decompression risks.
This certification is recognized worldwide, giving you the flexibility to dive with nitrox at any dive center.
Why Take the Nitrox Specialty?
